New Maternity Clothing Closet and Local Shopping Guide!
Our Board of Directors is deep in strategic planning for 2026! We have enjoyed casting a vision of how we hope to grow and continue to meet expecting families' needs for connection and maternity clothes. But we have something big on the horizon in the final weeks of 2025...
A New Clothing Closet in Petworth, DC!!
We are delighted to announce that we are opening another residence-based community clothing closet in Petworth, DC! Located at 9th and Upshur St., NW DC, the clothing closet will be just across the sidewalk from the Petworth Farmers Market. A team of Petworth volunteers is already working hard to get the clothing closet ready, and all are invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, December 13th from 3:00-4:00 PM. After we cut the ribbon, you can swap maternity and nursing clothing and meet other Local Maternity Thread supporters and their families. Kids are welcome! Warm beverages and light refreshments will be served. (See Facebook Event.)
Clothing Giveaways, and more
We are doing a big pregnancy and baby feeding supplies giveaway today through Sunday, November 16! Come get it anytime at 6905 Poplar Ave, TKPK - it’s out on a covered porch so you don’t need to schedule a time, just come! First come, first served. Please note that we no longer accept these items, only clothing (we got more donations than people were taking, and we just don’t have the space.)
In late October, we gave away clothing at a local event organized by Tommy's Pantry. The event was attended by families impacted by the recent gap in SNAP benefits and immigration raids, and they were very grateful to browse and take home maternity and nursing clothing.
We also delivered four boxes of winter maternity clothing for Community of Hope's maternity clothing closet.
NEW Maternity Clothing Guide in Partnership with Thrift the District
Finding maternity clothing that fits well, is sustainably made, and budget-friendly can be surprisingly hard! Of all the challenges that come with pregnancy, clothing shouldn’t be one of the most frustrating, and yet for many, it is. This guide is designed to help you find maternity clothing that fits your body, budget, and helps you make sustainable choices that feel good inside and out.
Big thanks to Stephanie Hernandez of Thrift the District for contributing her expertise on local secondhand shopping options and making good choices while thrifting!
Midterm Results are in about our Pilot Prenatal Support Group
Our pilot prenatal support group meets monthly from September through January.
Midterm survey results show that participants are enjoying and finding value in the group. They're also looking for more opportunities to connect, so we're setting up gatherings between the monthly meetings. We'll also move toward less facilitation and more time for discussion during the meetings.
We hope to offer additional prenatal support groups in Takoma Park and other neighborhoods in early 2026. If you’d like to join or help launch a prenatal group in your community, please let us know by responding to this email!
Help us Keep Growing
If you're excited about our new clothing closet and pilot prenatal support group, please consider throwing some cash into the hat so that we can continue to expand our reach! We are now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so all donations are tax deductible (if you donate on Venmo, please email info@localmaternitythread.org for a tax receipt).
