Launching Our Pilot Prenatal Support Group
Local Maternity Thread envisions a world in which prenatal journeys and maternity clothing are shared for healthier communities and a happier planet. This spring, we took time to listen to our community by conducting a Prenatal Support Needs Assessment—and what we learned is now shaping the way we support expecting families.
Our survey, completed by 20 parents and expecting families in Takoma Park, Silver Spring, and nearby DC neighborhoods, revealed an important truth: expecting parents want deeper, more meaningful connections with others who are navigating pregnancy at the same time.
What We Heard
Isolation & uncertainty: Respondents shared that pregnancy can be lonely, and they want localized, relevant information and emotional support.
Desire for deeper connections: 75% expressed strong interest in recurring, small in-person gatherings with the same group, prioritizing community over one-time events or large online groups.
Learning from Takoma Families: Those who had participated in the volunteer-led Takoma Families postpartum peer groups appreciated making new parent friends and accessing expert advice—but wished for tighter-knit relationships, smaller cohorts, and greater diversity.
These findings confirmed what we’ve long suspected: there is a real need for structured, cohort-based prenatal peer support in our community.
